Construction
This project has been a dream of the Sant Jordi Hostel family since we first saw the opportunity of acquiring the property. The Gracia neighborhood is such a cool and unique area of the city and has always been, in our opinion, the next best location in Barcelona. Since just after the acquisition of the property we began meticulously planning and designing the project. We hired some of the best designers in Barcelona and hunted down the most reputable construction team available. We want this hostel to be nothing less than the best quality hostel accommodation in Barcleona and our goal since the beginning has been to make the new Sant Jordi Gracia the best hostel in Barcelona, hands down.
Construction began in early October, 2011 and the plans have been in the works since the summer of 2009. We basically gutted the entire original building, tearing down everything that was not structurally weight bearing or foundation and starting from scratch. That means that everything in the hostel will be new and designed specifically around the needs of the hostel guest.
The interior design of the hostel is also something special and unique. It was important for us to find a concept that not only matched the Sant Jordi spirit but also the nature of the Gracia neighborhood and Barcelona as a whole. The Hostel Sant Jordi Gracia will be a bicycle themed hostel with various unique features to highlight the use of bicycles in the modern environmentally conscious world. Ok, from time to time the tour de France makes its way through Barcelona but our intention is not to create a bicycle racing oriented environment, rather a bicycle enjoying atmosphere. Barcelona is an amazingly bicycle friendly city. The local government even makes a special Biking Barcelona map that highlights all of the streets with specially designated bike lanes and other streets that have less traffic and are particularly useful for navigating the city by bike.
